Youth Crime and the Youth Justice System
Whether you or your child are experiencing the Criminal Justice System for the first time, or you have been involved in the system before, it can be a very worrying and stressful time. Hill Twine Solicitors and Barristers understand that every child, youth, and indeed parent, has different needs and we offer a service tailored to providing you with the best possible representation.
We always aim to ensure that the young person is diverted from the courts wherever possible, ever conscious of the potential future impact of criminal charges. We advise on alternatives to prosecution, such as restorative justice.
Youth crime is a highly specialised area due to the complexities of the Youth Justice System and it is crucial to be represented by a lawyer who is experienced in this jurisdiction. Hill Twine Solicitors & Barristers has an extensive Youth Court practice and our team frequently appears in the Dorset Youth Court, as well as Youth Courts in other areas, such as Southampton and Exeter.
More Reasons to Instruct Us
We Understand
Due to the nature of the Youth Justice System and the vulnerabilities of all youths involved, we understand how important it is to have confidence in the firm representing you or your child.
We Protect the Vulnerable
Our lawyers are skilled at dealing with young people who have mental health problems, learning difficulties, and other vulnerabilities in addition to their young age. We work closely with psychiatrists and other professionals to ensure the young person has appropriate assessments and help.
Free Representation
We can defend youths for free at the police station and in court proceedings, regardless of whether your case is being dealt with in the Youth Court, the magistrates’ court (if jointly charged with an adult) or, if it is more serious, in the Crown Court.
Funding
Legal Aid
We hold a Government Criminal Legal Aid contract which means we can represent all youths at the Police Station and eligible youths in the Criminal Courts for free. Those under the age of 16 automatically qualify for legal aid for court proceedings, as do those under the age of 18 and in full-time education. We will obtain the necessary information from you and make the application for a Representation Order on your behalf.
Private Funding
If you fall into the very small category of a youth who is not eligible for legal aid, we offer affordable fixed fee rates. Contact us to discuss your options and we can provide you with a quotation.
